Plant of the month – June

Astrantia (masterworts) or ‘Hattie’s pincushion’ hardy perennial.

Astrantia are clump forming herbaceous perennials with palmately lobed basal leaves and branched, erect wirey stems bearing compact umbrels of tiny flowers surrounded by a rosette of showy bracts.

They do well in light shade and also in full sun if soil is kept moist.

Astrantias also have a long flowering period from early summer to autumn.

If you suffer from slugs and snails this is the plant for you as they don’t like them.

Here at Thorngrove we have several varieties like April love, Pink Joyce, Purple Joyce, Red Joyce, and Sparkling Stars pink, so if you’re stopping by this month, be sure to ask about them!
