Plant of the month – Lily of the Valley

Convallaria majalis (Lily of the Valley) also known as lady’s tears.

It is a rhizomatous perennial plant that grows to about 25cm in height.

It has lovely Sweet scented white flowers which appear with a pair of elliptic leaves, the flowers are followed by red berries.

It will grow in most soils and will tolerate partial shade to full shade and will grow in any aspect of the garden.

It is a mat forming perennial and can become intrusive if not kept under control.

It makes a good plant for underplanting roses and is also good for ground cover.

Propagation is generally done by division in the Autumn.

Please be aware, they are potentially harmful and highly toxic by ingestion. Wearing gloves is advised when handling, and make sure to wash your hands afterward.
